Oui

FR/EN

February 17, 1943 Django Reinhardt (gtr), Gérard Lévecque, André Lluis (cl), Eugène Vées (gtr ryth), Gaston Léonard (drms), Jean Storne (bass)

Oui was written by Alix Combelle (music) and Louis Gasté (lyrics), both of them friends and colleagues of Django. It was one of the favorite songs during the german Occupation. Its popularity probably resides in the trick used by Gasté: the text is packed with references to other popular songs.

As always Django offers us a nice arrangement of this light swing melody. An introduction that sets the mood, the theme in D. Then, after a transition of the clarinets, Django plays two choruses in Bb. On the A part of the second chorus, the two clarinets play a riff that comes back to conclude the tune.

Lyrics (by L. Gasté)

Oui1

C’était un chef de musique
Qui doucement mourait d’amour
Pour une jeune fille magnifique
Qu’il trouvait belle comme le jour
A la tête de sa fanfare
Certain soir du mois de mai
Il fit un concert bizarre
Espérant qu’elle comprendrait

Oui, parlez moi d’amour, oh oui !
Je suis seul ce soir, oh oui!
J’attendrais si tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui
J’ai rêvé de toi, oh oui !
Cette nuit, mon amour oui !
Mon amour, si tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui
Oh, premier rendez vous
Oh ce n’est que sympathie, oui !
C’est fleur bleue
Si bleue
Oui tu m’apprendras dis, oh oui !
Quand viendra le jour oh oui !
J’attendrais si tu me dis oui, si tu me dis oui, si tu me dis oui, si tu me dis oui, si tu me dis oui

Séduite par un tel programme
Elle l’invita sans tarder
A venir écouter ses gammes
En prenant une tasse de thé.
Comme elle était hésitante
Pour lui dire qu’elle faiblissait
Elle lui joua toute frémissante
Tous les airs qu’il préférait

Oui, parlez moi d’amour, oh oui !
Je suis seul ce soir, oh oui!
J’attendrais si tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui

Le mariage fut magnifique
Et la belle sans tarder
Avec le chef de musique
Partit dans un nid douillet.
Mais au moment fatidique
D’échanger de doux secrets
Le maire, les pompiers et toute la clique
A la fenêtre chantaient

Oui, parlez moi d’amour, oh oui !
Je suis seul ce soir, oh oui!
J’attendrais si tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui, tu me dis oui

Once upon a time a conductor
Was madly in love
With an amazing young girl
As pretty as can be.
Leading the band
One night, in May
He played a special repertoire
Hoping she would understand.

Yeah, say you love me, oh yeah!
I am lonely tonight, oh yeah!
I will wait if you tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes
I dreamt of you, oh yeah!
This night, my love, oh yeah!
My love, if you tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes
Oh, first date
Oh it is only friendship, yeah!
It is romantic
So romantic
Yes, you will teach me, oh yeah!
When the day will come, oh yeah!
I will wait if you tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes

Seduced by such a program
She immediately invited him
To listen to her practice piano
While drinking a cup of tea.
As she was shy
To tell him she was falling for him
She played for him, shivering
All his favorite songs.

Yeah, say you love me, oh yeah!
I am lonely tonight, oh yeah!
I will wait if you tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes

The wedding was wonderful
And the lady promptly
Took the conductor
To a cozy nest.
But at the important time
When you share sweet secrets
The mayor, the firefighters and all the band members
Were under their windows singing

Yeah, say you love me, oh yeah!
I am lonely tonight, oh yeah!
I will wait if you tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes, tell me yes
